Artist’s Statement

Rebecca Smith

I begin work on each piece with compositional points, such as lines, drips and areas of colour,
sometimes using collage such as coloured tissue paper. I approach my abstract paintings as both a
landscape and a map, treating areas as a foreground or background but also as a flat surface
describing movement, containment or relationships between objects in space. I want to simultaneously describe
both vast and sublime landscapes and spaces and the claustrophobic sensation of the domestic or
industrial interior.

Creating and exploring maps in various forms is always the basis of my work. I experiment with a variety of approaches, media and influences: abstract expressionism, op art, illustration, site-specific wall-based schematics using cut vinyl, film stills, architectural plans, circuit boards, wall-paper patterns, occult and esoteric symbols, outsider art, the Gothic and representations of the Uncanny in the form of dysfunctional architecture.
